Arsenal have been handed a potential boost to their chances of securing a move for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.
What’s the news?
According to a recent report from The Athletic, the winger is apparently not interested in joining Leeds United despite seemingly being close to an agreement with the Whites, as he is more inclined to join one of Europe’s elite clubs.
The Gunners have also been (and continue to be) linked with a swoop for the Dutchman, who has had a storming start to the season with PSV by scoring 13 goals and delivering 10 assists in 16 appearances across all competitions.
Well worth taking advantage
Bearing in mind how Arsenal are currently top of the Premier League and aiming to win the Europa League this season, this and their historic credentials as one of Europe’s top footballing institutions should be more than enough to be a potential next destination for Gakpo to suit his aspirations.
Lauded as an “electric” player by journalist Josh Bunting on Twitter, the 23-year-old has scored three goals and delivered one assist in two Europa League games, leaving him an overall performance rating of 8.52/10 from WhoScored and making him the highest-rated player to feature in the tournament.
In fact, the Gunners are likely to get a good taste of what the winger can do as they are set to take on PSV twice in the Europa League before the end of this month.
With the 23-year-old having previously been reported to hold a price tag of £35m, this is definitely an investment that Edu should look to make as soon as possible, especially with other clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United apparently interested in the attacker.
If Gakpo impresses when PSV take on Arsenal in the Europa League in the coming weeks, this should prompt the north London club to get the ball rolling to potentially launch a January transfer bid for the player.
