Arsenal have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante.
That’s according to journalist Santi Aouna, who shared the news via Twitter.
The Foot Mercato reporter also revealed that Kante has “little chance” of continuing his journey with Chelsea and would prefer to stay in London, which is presumably why the Blues have offered the Frenchman to Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Kante at Chelsea
After winning the Premier League title with Leicester City in 2016, the 31-year-old joined his current club that summer in a deal worth a reported £30m. Since then, the midfielder has gone on to make 262 appearances for the west London outfit across all competitions, scoring 13 goals, providing 15 assists and winning numerous trophies along the way.
Across 26 league appearances last season, Kante made the third-highest number of successful tackles (34) and successful pressures (134) at Chelsea. He also ended the campaign with the fifth-most interceptions (44) and the joint-fifth highest number of blocks (37).
This highlights just how much of a defensive asset the £289k-per-week figure is for his club and what he would be able to offer to Mikel Arteta’s side should they decide to sign him.
He’d be a smart signing
With the Gunners only keeping three clean sheets from their eight league games this season despite being top of the table, perhaps adding the ex-Leicester colossus to their squad could be a smart move for them.
Lauded as a “world class” player by former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who played alongside the Frenchman at Stamford Bridge, Kante would certainly add some strength, depth and experience to Arteta’s ranks alongside the likes of Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey.
If this proposed opportunity to sign the Chelsea tank come to fruition, it is definitely something that Arsenal should seek to execute, especially if it would mean keeping the 31-year-old out of Tottenham’s clutches.
