Arsenal target Klostermann in talks over new Leipzig deal – should the Gunners be worried?

Arsenal showed an interest in RB Leipzig right-back Lukas Klostermann over the summer, and as a result, the Bundesliga side are now in talks with the defender over a new deal.

The Gunners, along with La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid, were tracking the Germany international over the summer, however, neither side firmed up their interest and the full-back remained in the Bundesliga.

Arsenal have been tipped to revisit their interest in the new year, with Unai Emery keen on strengthening his defensive ranks in the upcoming window.

However, Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche revealed to the media that the club are in discussions with the 23-year-old over a new deal.

Talking to German outlet Bild, cited by Sports Mole, Krosche said:

We have said that we would like to extend Klostermann’s contract, and we are in talks.

But we don’t feel any pressure. It’s important for me that you talk to the boys early enough for them to have time to think about it.

But should this news worry the Gunners?

Klostermann is currently under contract until June 2021, so if he agrees on a new deal, it would make it extremely difficult to lure him to the Premier League.

Emery currently has Hector Bellerin as his first-choice right-back, with versatile pair Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Callum Chambers also able to slot in when the Spaniard is absent.

However, a move for Klostermann could be a shrewd piece of business if they can go under the radar and land the German in a cut-price deal.

Klostermann would undeniably bolster Arsenal’s defensive ranks. He’s impressed in recent years with his ability on the ball, tireless work rate and electric pace, and at 23, he would inject some welcome youth into Arsenal’s backline.
