According to a report from Tom Morgan of The Telegraph, the Premier League could lose an automatic Champions League place under new proposals whcih are currently being discussed by the European Leagues.
Two options are reportedly being discussed under the proposals, which are intended to help winners of some of Europe’s ‘smaller’ leagues get into the Champions League ahead of sides who finish fourth in ‘bigger’ leagues.
The first option is to revert back to the old style of qualification, where the sides who finish in fourth-place in the likes of the Premier League and La Liga, are forced to play a qualifier to make it to the Champions League group stages.
The second option up for discussion is that fourth-placed sides in the larger leagues don’t get any Champions League place at all and play Europa League football instead.
Any changes that are agreed upon could be put into place within two seasons, according to Morgan’s report.

These proposals could prove to be a major issue for the likes of Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea and Tottenham. Liverpool and Man City are the standout sides in the division at present and as such, it’s likely that they both finish in the top two places in the league for the next season or two.
If these new proposals come in, Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea and Tottenham will all essentially be battling for one guaranteed place in the Champions League, with the possibility of a qualifier on the cards for another, and that could be a major issue as competition for that last automatic place will be fierce, if these plans go ahead.
