Emery trusts Xhaka with the armband – Is he right to?

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has revealed that he fully trusts Granit Xhaka with the captain’s armband, as reported on the Sky Sports.

Emery decided to make Xhaka the club’s captain, which was not the most popular decision amongst the fanbase.

The Swiss international won a player vote to be the skipper and Emery is backing him to do a good job. He said:

They (the players), with the vote, it gave him confidence and I also gave him that confidence after that.

And now – small things or big things – we are going to work individually and collectively to be strong. And also to show our supporters, and to show in our way, how we can be strong with all the players and that captain.

I also have big confidence and trust in every player, the captain [and the others] because I think now in the dressing room we have a very good spirit.

Is he right to trust Xhaka?

Majority of the Arsenal fan base were not happy with the decision to hand Xhaka the armband.

Several below-par performances have led to the fans turning on the midfielder and he even struggled to get into the side.

With Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira playing so well, the fact that Xhaka is captain may mean that Emery is forced to play him, which is not ideal for the club.

However, he’s reiterated that he trusts Xhaka and Arsenal fans will just need to get on board and back their manager and skipper.
