Monreal completes Real Sociedad switch – A bad move from Arsenal?

Nacho Monreal has completed his move to Spanish side Real Sociedad, after spending six years at the club. This could end up being a bad decision by Arsenal, who are now left with only two first team left backs.

With Kieran Tierney currently recovering from injury, Sead Kolasinac will step in for Monreal until Tierney is match fit. This could still be detrimental to the Arsenal team who have now lost depth in the left back position, now relying on Tierney and Kolasinac not to pick up any injuries. Despite this they may promote a youth player into the senior squad.

Arsenal are losing a very experienced defender in Monreal, who was very versatile and played in multiple positions in his time at the club. They have also lost a great role model, character and leader. He was also a fan favourite at the Emirates, and will be sorely missed by the fans.

However, it would probably have been the best time for the Spaniard to move on after 6 years at the Gunners, and with Tierney joining this summer, his starting place was already under scrutiny, and he would probably want to get as much game time as possible at this stage in his career.

Overall, although this could be a bad decision from Arsenal, who now rely on Kolasinac and Tierney’s return to the team, it was probably best for Monreal to make the switch back to Spain. Following his exit, he will be definitely considered as one of the greats at the club.
