Arsenal to miss out on Khedira – but it’s not bad news

Juventus have decided to keep hold of reported Arsenal target Sami Khedira amid claims that they could terminate his contract, but it’s not bad news for the Gunners at all.

It was previously stated that Unai Emery had identified the Germany international as a target in the summer transfer window, with his future in Turin unlikely.

However, according to claims from Sky Sport Italia, as cited in a report from Football Italia, new Juve boss Maurizio Sarri has opted to retain the services of Khedira for the Serie A season ahead.

Missing out on Khedira shouldn’t come as a blow for the Gunners. Instead, we reckon it’s a bullet dodged; he is past his best, likely to command high wages, and would not be a significant upgrade on the current midfield options.

Khedira is by no means a bad player, and his pedigree speaks for itself. However, Arsenal’s recruitment in the summer indicates a shift in approach, with more promising talents from across Europe targeted, rather than seasoned pros.

David Luiz was the exception to this rule, but his signing was completed to provide a stop-gap ahead of William Saliba’s return from Saint-Etienne next summer.

Khedira still has something to give, but Arsenal are better served handing opportunities to the likes of Matteo Guendouzi, Joe Willock and Lucas Torreira than signing a player whose best days are behind him.
