Emery hints at one more signing – do the Gunners need more?

Unai Emery has hinted that Arsenal could land one more summer signing before the deadline closes this week – but do the Gunners need more?

The Spaniard, who was talking to the media following the 2-1 pre-season defeat to Barcelona, cited by the Telegraph, said:

If we can sign one player who can improve our squad, we can do that.

Plenty of names have been linked with a move to the Emirates in recent days, with a surprise Philippe Coutinho deal surfacing over the weekend, however, it appears as if defensive reinforcements are what Emery is after.

The Gunners have been fairly busy in recent weeks, bringing in the talented trio of William Saliba, Dani Ceballos and Nicolas Pepe. Saliba has since returned to Saint-Etienne on loan for the upcoming season, leaving Emery extremely short of quality options at the back.

Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny, who both didn’t fill the Gunners faithful with confidence last season, could also depart the club before the window closes across Europe, meaning the Spaniard desperately needs to add to his defensive ranks.

Arsenal seem fairly settled in midfield and attack, for the time being, leaving a left-back and centre-back the two areas high on Emery’s wishlist.

Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates all summer, however, a deal is still yet to be reached regarding a payment structure in a £25 million deal.

Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani is another name who has been tipped to make the move to the Premier League, with the Italian falling out of favour in Turin.

However, with potentially only one more summer arrival coming through the door before midnight on Thursday, Gunners fans will be split as to which position they would like to strengthen.

A move for Tierney would be a great piece of business but would leave the Gunners short of quality options at the back.

It will be an interesting week at the Emirates, and the if the club can somehow bring in two additions over the next four days, it could play a major role in the Gunners’ chances of challenging in the forthcoming campaign.
