Daniele Rugani is not the man that will solve Arsenal’s defensive frailties

Daniele Rugani is not the man that will solve Arsenal’s defensive frailties

Juventus defender Daniele Rugani is the latest player to be linked with a move to join Arsenal, but the club shouldn’t be hoping that he is the man to fix their defensive problems.

Reports in Italy have suggested a two-year loan deal for Rugani could be on the cards and while he would certainly be an immediate improvement, he may not necessarily be the long-term solution for Unai Emery.

Rugani is a player that was highly thought of for some time, but one that has never really proven himself at Juventus.

He impressed on loan at Empoli under Maurizio Sarri and as a result, the former Chelsea boss tried to bring him to Stamford Bridge. Despite lengthy negotiations, a deal did not go through with the Blues unconvinced.

The Italian has suffered as a result of a lack of game time in Turin, making just 52 league appearances over the course of the last three seasons. One can forgive Rugani for failing to cement a regular place in the team, you only have to take one look at the names in front of him.

During the few appearances he did make last season, it was clear to see the player’s confidence has been knocked and he needs to rebuild that as soon as possible if he is to be a success in London.

He needs to move on from Juventus to forge a career for himself and while he could one day become the leader that Arsenal hope for, it would certainly be a risk to pin their hopes on a player who has played so little senior football over the last few seasons.
