Arsenal join the race to sign Bundesliga defender

Arsenal have joined Borussia Dortmund in the race for Mainz defender Abdou Diallo, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The reporter claims that the German side are currently leading the race for the young centre-back, but he is on Arsenal scout Sven Mislintat.

Diallo has made a name for himself this season in Mainz’ backline as they battled Bundesliga relegation, after joining from Monaco last summer.

Arsenal will be keen to strengthen their defence this transfer window, after conceding over 50 goals last season.

German centre-back Shkodran Mustafi could be on his way out of the Emirates this summer and captain Laurent Koscielny is injured for an extended period, so the Mainz defender could be a priority on the Gunners’ list.

The 21-year-old is described as an intelligent defender with a gift for reading the game, an attribute which the inconsistent Mustafi is criticised for lacking.

The Nigerian youth international has four years remaining on his Mainz contract, so it could take a significant fee to convince the Bundesliga side to sell.
