Wenger has however taken lots of criticism for his inability to change with the times, and spend big in order to keep up with the bankrolled juggernauts of Manchester City and Chelsea, who along with Manchester United have dominated the Premier League standings over the past 13 years.
Fans have also lost faith in their long-standing boss due to the fact that despite moving into a new stadium that should have instigated another era of success, they have instead been left behind not only by Chelsea, City and United but also their fierce London rivals Tottenham, who have finally finished above the Gunners for the first time in Wenger’s reign – all but placing the nail in the coffin for Wenger.
Arsenal could also miss out on Champions League football for the first time under Wenger, and as a result, his future at the club has been the point of much deliberation this season.
Jardim has subsequently been lined up as Wenger’s replacement, having guided a youthful Monaco side to the Champions League semi-finals – they currently trail 2-0 on aggregate after the first leg of their game against Juventus. The French side are also en route to pick up a first Ligue 1 title in 17 years.
