Arsenal are set to hijack Chelsea’s move for Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk, the Mirror reports.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is thought to be interested in bringing in the Dutchman as part of a defensive, tactical shake-up. Wenger is looking to move to a three at the back formation, so requires a new centre-half in order to implement his plan.

Van Dijk moved to Saints from Celtic in 2015 for £13m. The report states that Arsenal will look to make a £50m move for the 25-year-old, which would make him the most expensive Dutch player in history

Arsenal face tough competition for Van Dijk. Alongside Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City and Everton are all thought to be interested in the defender.

The Gunners currently sit sixth in the Premier League, and are looking to continue their challenge for the Champions League spots. Their next match is an FA Cup semi-final against Man City on Sunday.
