Arsene Wenger decided to make ten changes to his Arsenal side for the EFL Cup quarterfinal with Southampton but his gamble didn’t pay off as the Gunners were beaten 2-0 at the Emirates.
Southampton made eight changes themselves but looked much the brighter team as first half goals from Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand condemned Arsenal to their first defeat since the opening day of the season.
In truth, the Gunners didn’t really look like scoring with a second half chance for substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain probably their best opportunity.
Arsenal do have a lot of strength in-depth in terms of the squad, but it’s clear that making so many changes left he Gunners looking sluggish and off the pace.
