This weekend, the Gunners take on London rivals Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League in a match which could, at last, see Arsene Wenger’s men put some distance between them and both Leicester and Manchester City at the top of the table. However, Arsenal have drawn their last two games, meaning that this one will not only prove to be somewhat of a challenge for them to rediscover their form but also presents a real opportunity to display their credentials as potential title winners.
One man who seems to have rediscovered his form at Chelsea is Spaniard Diego Costa. With Chelsea struggling in the league, it is unsurprising that Costa has also been struggling. However, under Guus Hiddink, the Spaniard seems rejuvenated and is the club’s top scorer with nine goals for the season.

When I wrote prior to the game against Chelsea earlier in the season, I claimed that aggravating Costa would affect his game, and lo-and-behold it did just that. However, it didn’t pan out as I’d expected; Gabriel was sent off and Costa was very lucky to remain on the pitch. Yet, I remain adamant that the best way to deal with Costa is to keep someone marking him at all times, throwing their weight around a little bit and making sure he is aware that he can’t go where he pleases. If the 27-year-old were to be irritated early on, then his mindset will be offset, resulting in a severe dip in his form throughout the game.
The other player who seems to be pulling the strings for Chelsea this season is Willian. The winger has been one of the Blues’ only bright sparks of the season and is one of the few reasons as to why they have as many points as they do. The Brazilian is lethal with his free kicks but is also an astute finisher of the ball; being unafraid to shoot from distance or from improbable angles. It will be vital for Arsenal’s success in the game, that the attacker is closed down quickly and not allowed to have too much time on the ball. The most dangerous part about Willian’s game is the fact that he can both shoot from range and run with the ball. Should Willian be allowed to break past one of the Arsenal defenders, then his immense speed could see him break away entirely from the defenders and create another attack for Hiddink’s side.

The main focus of the Arsenal players this weekend will be another three points. Obviously bragging rights over a local rival is very important for the both the players and fans, but the points will ultimately be crucial in deciding whether or not the Gunners claim the league title later this season. They mustn’t go onto the pitch with the mindset that they want to impress or humiliate a slightly knocked Chelsea side, they should be instead focused on grinding out a result if need-be and ensuring that all three points are secure. They can’t afford to lose concentration for even a second because as was seen against Liverpool, the opposition can pounce at any time.
