Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has claimed that no team will repeat the unbeaten season that Arsenal’s Invincibles managed to have in 2003/04.
In an interview following City’s 2-1 home defeat to West Ham United, Yaya Toure said
I’m a competitor and, in football it’s all about being a competitor, but in 38 games you will not see 38 wins. It’s impossible in the Premier League now. The Premier League is always improving and this sequence in football, the Invincibles, it will never happen again in the Premier League.
Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles went down in English footballing history as they remained undefeated in an entire Premier League season, winning 26 and drawing 12 of their 38 fixtures.
Before their defeat to West Ham, league leaders Manchester City had won 11 straight matches, but the loss to the Hammers abruptly ended their winning run.
The Ivorian international has claimed that the league is much more competitive than other top European leagues. He said
All the teams are spending money, buying big players. Like West Ham, even Leicester and Stoke spending on players from Barcelona. You can understand how the Premier League is so competitive because all the players want to come to England and want to improve, and want to play well.
The finances in English football have skyrocketed in recent years due to the amounts paid by TV broadcasters, and it is this money that is allowing mid-table teams to spend huge amounts on players. This, according to Toure, is making the league more competitive, and therefore, the chances of a team remaining unbeaten throughout 38 games is highly unlikey.
