Arsenal look set to be rivaled by Liverpool for the signature of highly-rated midfielder William Carvalho. Despite being just 23-years-old, Carvalho won Player of the Tournament at this summer’s European Under 21 Championships as Portugal lost out to Sweden on penalties in the final.
Both Arsenal and Liverpool were rumoured to be interested in signing Carvalho in the summer, but neither side made sufficient ground in order to make the defensive midfielder their player. The Sporting Lisbon man prefers the defensive role in the centre, which would be a huge asset for both sides. Arsenal have woes in the centre of midfield with injury-prone Jack Wilshere, as Liverpool do too with Jordan Henderson – currently on the way back from injury.

Wenger will need to make a swift movement in order to capture Carvalho if Liverpool do decide to make a move for the player. Many Arsenal fans were disappointed with the Gunners failing to capture a single outfield player, but the problems mainly lay in the attacking department, not the defensive.
Both sides will likely compete with each other during the January transfer window, despite Carvalho being currently injured himself with a foot injury, but he will no doubt improve whichever side he chooses – if given the option.
