Arsenal shotstopper David Ospina is poised to remain at the club beyond this summer after talks with manager Arsene Wenger, according to Steve Stammers of the Daily Mirror.
Fellow goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is set to leave the club on a season-long loan to Roma and the media had speculated that Colombian goalkeeper Ospina could follow the Pole out of the door at the Emirates, subsequent to the signing of experienced goalkeeper Petr Cech from Premier League rivals Chelsea, who is expected to be the Frenchman’s first-choice between the sticks.
However, the Daily Mirror’s Steve Stammers understands that the 26-year-old is willing to act as Cech’s understudy going into the new season after a summit meeting with Arsene Wenger immediately following the conclusion of the Copa America.
Wenger assured Ospina of regular first-team opportunities in numerous competitions after his impressive performances last season earned him the number one role in North London. Steve Stammers also writes that the coach, who has spent the past 19-years in charge of Arsenal, would have dismissed any transfer request from the former Nice player.
Ospina kept eight clean sheets in 18 Premier League appearances for Arsenal last season as the Gunners finished in the Premier League’s top three for the first time since 2012.
