# Arsenal news: Arteta’s side secure landmark victory at Anfield

In Arsenal news, Arsenal have finally found a way to win at Anfield again. Their latest victory owed as much to defensive discipline as Kai Havertz’s decisive goal.

The Gunners claimed a 1-0 Premier League victory against Liverpool, ending their 14-year wait for victory at the iconic stadium. Declan Rice set up their opener as Havertz put the visitors ahead on the 16th minute.

It was a tough afternoon for Mikel Arteta’s side as they were put under sustained pressure by their opponents. The Reds also created a number of dangerous chances throughout the match, especially in the first half.

Arsenal held their composure, and the backline was calm throughout. David Raya made the crucial interventions to keep the lead safe.

They are now three points ahead at the top of the Premier League after Manchester City lost to Brighton.

## **Arsenal show a different side of their title credentials**

While the attack has been a key aspect of Arsenal’s title charge, they were put under pressure defensively at Anfield.

Liverpool came out aggressively after going behind. Virgil van Dijk caused problems from set pieces, and Florian Wirtz hit the crossbar from a free kick.

Raya was quick to block Van Dijk’s dangerous flick on and prevent Alexander Isak from capitalising. However, Alexis Mac Allister did head over the bar as Liverpool looked to level the game.

Arsenal were forced into another stretch as Jurrien Timber blocked well. William Saliba and Gabriel helped to limit Liverpool’s chances.

The stats tell the story of how well the visitors defended. Liverpool had 17 shots but couldn’t get one on target.

Liverpool were unable to create a shot on target for the first time in recorded history (since 2003-04) in a Premier League game at Anfield.

Meanwhile, it was the first time that Arsenal had kept a clean sheet in the Premier League at the ground since September 2012. The result was especially important following their Carabao Cup heartbreak against Fleetwood Town earlier in the week.

## **Havertz and Rice deliver when Arsenal need them**

Whilst they have made a great defensive stand, Arsenal’s two most influential players in the final third made the difference.

Rice won the turnover, drove down the right and played a low cross into the six-yard box. Havertz made his run to the back post and finished to give Arsenal the early lead.

The goal also takes Havertz to 46 Premier League goals, making him the most prolific German in the competition and overtaking former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gündogan.

Rice had a huge influence on the game. His performance in the middle of the park helped Arsenal deal with the intensity of Liverpool, and he was named man of the match.

Christos Tzolis provided an important attacking outlet. His pace created chances to ease pressure on Arsenal. He forced an incredible save from Alisson with a late first-time effort.

The win was Arsenal’s first at Anfield in any competition since September 2012 and their 300th away win in the Premier League.

Arteta’s team have had a stellar start to the season, taking 24 points from nine games. They have also proved they are capable of getting results in tough circumstances.

They will now look ahead to their Champions League game on Wednesday against Slavia Prague and then back to domestic action against Hull City.
