# Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn ‘fed up’ with Manchester City talk and wants a ruling this season

Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn has had enough of the constant wait around Manchester City’s 115 charges. He wants the Premier League to deal with it this season and thinks it’s a serious possibility that they will be relegated.

An independent commission concluded that Manchester City was guilty of 114 out of 115 charges, and the Premier League confirmed the finding on 29 September.

They claimed that the club had violated their financial rules systematically for almost a decade.

Manchester City responded that they were disappointed and surprised and that they would look into their options for appealing the ruling. Sanctions will be decided during a separate hearing.

Winterburn won three league titles with Arsenal. He told [Casino Kings](https://www.casinokings.com/):

“I’ve been talking about this a lot, and I’m fed up with it. I want it resolved. It’s frustrating that they’ve been found guilty, but we don’t know the full details. Everyone is waiting for that.

## City keep winning as appeal looms

His frustration is understandable. The outcome has raised as many questions as it has answered, and City has continued to win.

They have taken maximum points from their first five matches of the season under new manager Enzo Maresca. Winterburn doubts an appeal will overturn the commission’s work:

“My gut feeling is that you can appeal, but can you really get off 114 charges? I don’t think so. Otherwise, people would question the competence of the panel. I think there would be serious scrutiny if City got off.

“Some charges might be dropped, but if they stand, my feeling is that City could face relegation through a severe points deduction that effectively keeps them out of the league.

Reports suggest that the commission has the power to impose fines, points deductions or even expulsion. Winterburn should know about the feeling of heading into a drop. He ended his playing days at West Ham when they were relegated in 2003.

## “The Premier League will look very silly”

He believes it will be important that the timing of any punishment is considered as much as the punishment itself:

“I think it has to be dealt with this season. How bad would it look for the Premier League if City won? It already looks bad when journalists talk about their wins without knowing what it means.

“City are top of the league but could potentially be at the bottom. That doesn’t work. The decisions and the charges need to be dealt with quickly.

He accepts the process may not be simple, but he has a warning for the league if it drags on:

“I don’t know how easy or difficult that will be, but if it isn’t resolved by the end of the season, I think the Premier League will look very silly.”

For now the sanctions hearing is still to come, and the city is ready to fight on as Winterburn insists that the Premier League simply cannot allow a ruling to be delayed to next season.
