# Arteta commits to Arsenal until 2030 as his influence reaches new heights

It’s been the talk of the town this week: Mikel Arteta contract. As the Premier League champions’ manager signs a lucrative four-year deal. Few doubt who is running the show

## **A long-term commitment**

Mikel Arteta has tied his future to Arsenal until 2030. The message from the Emirates is that this is only the beginning. The new four-year contract is understood to be worth more than £20m a season. This makes the Spaniard the best-paid manager in the Premier League. Only Atlético Madrid’s Diego Simeone is thought to earn more.

It marks a significant jump from the £10m salary, plus a £5m bonus for Champions League qualification, that he agreed to in 2024.

## **Chasing Wenger’s record**

If this agreement were to go through, this would mean that Arteta would have been in charge for over 10 years. His seventh anniversary in charge being later this year in December. While it is still a long way to go to match Arsène Wenger’s almost 22-year reign at Arsenal, such a comparison is inevitable.

At 44, he is the second-youngest manager after José Mourinho to win the Premier League.

## **Power behind the scenes**

Arteta is believed to hold a direct line to co-chair Josh Kroenke and carries significant weight on most major decisions. Arsenal’s decision against a major Emirates expansion reportedly followed his concerns about the disruption of a temporary move to Wembley or elsewhere. Ownership, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, is also thought to have baulked at the cost of lifting capacity to 70,000.

Transfers have a similar story to tell. Arteta allegedly made the decision not to go after Malick Fofana. Instead securing playing time for 16-year-old Max Dowman. Time will tell if that move will turn out to be a bad one. Christos Tzolis will not play for at least three more weeks due to a hamstring injury he picked up playing for the Greek national team.

## **Win the dog knows who is boss**

Win, the chocolate labrador who starred in May’s title celebrations, came to join his owner at London Colney this year. Arteta made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Sources close to the therapy dog suggest that he has many humans on speed dial including favourites Kai Havertz, David Raya and Mikel Merino. Nevertheless, Arteta is his preferred human, making him Win’s top dog.

## **Eyes on a dynasty**

Arteta’s ambitions are clear. Arsenal want back-to-back league titles for the first time since the 1930s, and the European crown that slipped away when they lost the final to PSG on penalties.

Whether he can sustain the intensity for that long is the question, although he barely looks a day older than when he started.
