# Guimaraes lifts Arsenal from the bench as the champions come from behind to beat Leeds

**Arsenal 2-1 Leeds match report | Premier League, Emirates Stadium, Saturday 10 October 2026**

Arsenal recovered from a deserved Leeds lead and won 2-1 at the Emirates. Bruno Guimaraes scored a fine strike just seven minutes after coming off the bench. The win ended Leeds’ unbeaten start and kept the defending champions in the title race after their defeat at Brighton.

Riccardo Calafiori had levelled seven minutes after James Justin put the visitors ahead. Guimaraes then supplied the finish to a flowing move that Arsenal had threatened all afternoon but only produced once.

The win takes Arsenal to 15 points, level with leaders Manchester City, who stay top on goal difference. It also ends a three-week wait for a league game since the Brighton loss.

## A frustrating first half

Arsenal had the ball but little else for long spells. Leeds, who came in with the league’s best defensive record, were compact and sharp on the break. Four offside calls stopped Arsenal from getting a shot away until the 21st minute, when Kai Havertz twisted mid-air to head Noni Madueke’s cross straight into the arms of James Trafford.

Leeds had made their own early mark. They won a corner and had two attempts at goal in the eighth minute; the second was deflected just wide. Anton Stach’s close-range effort from Gabriel Gudmundsson’s cross struck team-mate Jayden Bogle shortly before the half-hour. James Justin needed lengthy treatment for a nose injury around the same time.

David Raya had to save a fierce close-range shot in the 44th minute to keep the game goalless at the break. Arsenal had 60% of the ball, but Leeds led the shots 6-4 and shots on target 3-1. Expected goals were almost level at 0.41 to 0.39 in Arsenal’s favour. Bukayo Saka, in superb form this season, was doubled up on by Gudmundsson and Tarik Muharemovic and had only 26 touches in the first half.

## Justin strikes, and Calafiori hits back

Nothing changed at half-time. Early in the second half, Madueke’s cross set up Martin Odegaard, whose hard low shot was comfortably saved by a diving Trafford.

Leeds took the lead in the 55th minute. Gudmundsson, a threat at both ends all day, slid a low pass across the box that Raya couldn’t reach. Justin arrived at the far post and finished for his side’s first goal of the afternoon.

The lead lasted only seven minutes. Madueke, Arsenal’s most dangerous player, whipped a cross to the back post, and Ben White nodded it back across goal. Havertz drew two defenders, and Calafiori, free at the far post, finished past Trafford for his first goal of the season.

## Arteta’s bench decides it

Mikel Arteta made a triple substitution moments after the equaliser, replacing Myles Lewis-Skelly, White and Havertz with Guimaraes, Jurrien Timber and Viktor Gyokeres. Seven minutes after coming on, Guimaraes struck. Madueke, Odegaard and Rice combined to work the ball to the Brazilian midfielder on the edge of the area, and his low, drilled shot beat Trafford. He had helped start the move himself.

It was his first goal at the Emirates and his second for Arsenal, after his long-range strike against Sunderland last month. Pundit Ally McCoist later named him man of the match.

Leeds’ substitutions, which began in the 71st minute, failed to make the desired impact. Daniel Farke introduced Brenden Aaronson and Harry Wilson for Ao Tanaka and Noah Okafor, then brought on Lukas Nmecha for Justin. There was a brief mix-up when the fourth official initially displayed Gudmundsson’s number. Leeds moved to a 4-4-2. Justin had earlier become Leeds’ fifth player booked, for catching Guimaraes’ heels to stop an Arsenal counter-attack.

## Missed chances and a nervy finish

Arsenal should have made it comfortable. Guimaraes sent Saka through, but Aaronson got back to block his shot. Odegaard then missed an open goal, flicking his finish to Trafford after Rice’s two superb touches brought down a deep cross from the left. Odegaard was booked for delaying a Leeds goal-kick, and he made way for Mikel Merino in the 89th minute.

Leeds had been the better side for an hour, but they faded after the equaliser. Aaronson shot into a defender after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s pass when he might have left it for Nmecha.

Five minutes of stoppage time added late drama. Trafford came well out of his area but miscontrolled the ball with his chest. Gyokeres took it round him but checked and went wide of the open goal, and Leeds got enough defenders back to thwart him. Ethan Ampadu’s long throws also caused problems, with Guimaraes and Merino clearing the danger, and Gabriel dealt with two crosses aimed at Calvert-Lewin. In the closing seconds, Saka was through on goal but could not score.
