# Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reveals major change after title win

**Mikel Arteta has revealed a major change to his Arsenal approach after last season’s Premier League triumph, with the Gunners boss now ready to give his players greater freedom on the pitch.**

Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the league title last season, but Arteta believes their success can become the starting point for another stage of development rather than the end of the project.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with [The Times](https://www.thetimes.com/sport/football/article/arsenal-mikel-arteta-interview-new-season-tmvmkxqmc), the Spaniard explained that six and a half years of intensive coaching have taken his squad to a point where he can begin loosening his control.

Arteta believes the players now have the “capacity, the freedoms and the understanding” to take greater responsibility themselves.

## Mikel Arteta hands Arsenal players more freedom

Arteta has built his Arsenal side around detailed positional demands and a clearly defined structure.

That approach ultimately delivered the Premier League title, but the next challenge is ensuring Arsenal continue developing rather than simply repeating what worked last season.

Giving players greater responsibility could help.

The likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze possess the technical quality to make decisions in attacking areas without every movement being dictated from the touchline.

There have already been suggestions that Arsenal want to become more fluid this season after relying heavily on defensive control and set-pieces during their title-winning campaign.

Arteta’s comments therefore offer an intriguing indication of how the champions could evolve.

The manager is not abandoning the principles that transformed Arsenal. Instead, he appears increasingly willing to trust the squad those principles have helped create.

Recruitment remains part of that process.

[ReadArsenal reported on Friday that Arsenal have moved for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah](https://readarsenal.com/2026/08/14/arsenal-make-jarell-quansah-move-as-fabrizio-romano-confirms-fresh-talks/), with Arteta still looking to strengthen before the transfer window closes.

Sunday’s Community Shield against Manchester City provides the first competitive opportunity to see whether Arsenal’s greater freedom translates onto the pitch.

After finally climbing to the top of English football, Arteta is already changing how he intends to keep them there.
