Arsenal could bank £35m without giving up on Hale End star

Ethan Nwaneri playing for Arsenal amid RB Leipzig transfer interest

Selling Ethan Nwaneri would initially look like a huge gamble for Arsenal.

The 19-year-old remains one of Hale End’s brightest graduates, but the proposed Ethan Nwaneri transfer to RB Leipzig could be structured very differently from a straightforward permanent exit.

Arsenal are in advanced talks with Leipzig and want to retain long-term control through a buy-back clause. The reported structure could allow the Gunners to raise around €35million to €40m now, before potentially bringing Nwaneri back for €55m to €60m if his development continues.

Ethan Nwaneri transfer could solve Arsenal problem

Nwaneri needs regular senior football.

That became particularly clear last season. He managed only 165 Premier League minutes for Arsenal before joining Marseille in January, where opportunities remained limited.

His six-month spell in France produced 11 senior appearances and two goals in all competitions. FotMob’s Ethan Nwaneri career record

Another season spent on the fringes would do little for a player who turned 19 in March.

Arsenal’s problem is that finding Nwaneri enough minutes has become increasingly difficult.

Martin Ødegaard and Eberechi Eze can play centrally, while Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke provide established options from the right. Max Dowman’s rapid progress creates further competition.

Arsenal have now also agreed a £75m deal for Bruno Guimarães, adding another major midfield option for Mikel Arteta.

That does not mean Arsenal have stopped believing in Nwaneri. It means his development may require something Arsenal cannot currently guarantee.

Buy-back clause could protect Arsenal

That is what makes Leipzig particularly interesting.

The Bundesliga club have a strong record of giving talented young players significant first-team responsibility, rather than simply adding them to a deep squad.

ReadArsenal reported on Tuesday that talks with Leipzig have reached an advanced stage, with a buy-back option forming part of discussions.

Further reporting says Arsenal want to retain the possibility of bringing Nwaneri back if he fulfils his potential in Germany. FootballPlace reports that a €55m to €60m buy-back figure has been discussed.

That structure changes the calculation considerably.

Arsenal would receive a substantial fee for a player they cannot currently promise regular football. Nwaneri would get the opportunity to establish himself at senior level, while the Gunners would retain a potential route to reverse the decision.

There would still be risk.

Nwaneri is under contract at Arsenal until 2030 and could ultimately become worth considerably more than the figures currently being discussed. Selling talented academy players will always create the possibility of regret.

However, keeping a teenager without providing the minutes required for his development carries risk too.

If Arsenal can raise around £30m while securing a sensible buy-back clause, the deal could eventually suit everyone.
