Arsenal host Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night in the Champions League semi-finals, as Mikel Arteta’s side look to book their spot in the final in Budapest at the end of the month.
The Gunners eased their way past Fulham on Saturday evening in the Premier League, courtesy of a brace from Viktor Gyokeres and a strike from Bukayo Saka. This result sees the North Londoners move six points clear of Manchester City at the summit of the English top flight, ahead of Pep Guardiola’s team’s trip to Everton on Monday night.
Arteta’s outfit now have the momentum in the title race, and the pressure is subsequently on the Citizens to catch up to them. The Manchester-based side play twice before Arsenal face West Ham on Sunday at the London Stadium.
Attention now turns away from this intense title race and back towards continental action for Arteta and his squad. The Gunners have the opportunity to reach their first final in Europe’s most prodigious competition since 2006, and thus, they’ll be fired up and ready to put their domestic endeavours to one side.
Atletico rested several key players in their victory over Valencia at the weekend. Julian Alvarez and Marcos Lorente were left out altogether, while Antoine Griezmann, Ademola Lookman, Koke, Jan Oblak and Marc Pubill were all left on the bench.
Diego Simeone’s ensemble should be fit and fresh, although Arsenal were also able to play in second gear in the second half of their game against Fulham. With the tie level at the interval, there’s everything to play for in N5.
