Viktor Gyokeres had one of his best nights in an Arsenal as he scored the opener in their 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.

Gyokeres impressed against Atletico Madrid, particularly from 12 yards out as he bagged a thunderous opening goal.

The Swede seemed determined to make a statement and was a real handful for Diego Simeone’s back four.

Gyokeres delivered against Atletico Madrid and there is a case to make that he was Arsenal’s best attacker in the Spanish capital. Arsenal fans were full of praise for the 27-year-old on X.

Arsenal fans hail Viktor Gyokeres vs Atletico Madrid

One Arsenal fan lauded Gyokeres’ display against Atletico Madrid, writing: “Big up, Gyokeres. I’ll remember you performing in a Champions League semi-final. Our only threat. [Noni] Madueke and Martinelli…do not get me started on [those two].”

Considering Gyokeres has underwhelmed at Arsenal for the most part, a supporter asked fellow Gunners fan whether he could call him their best performing forward against Diego Simeone and Co: “Gyokeres has been our best forward tonight. Am I allowed to say that?”

A third supporter replied, claiming that the former Coventry City goalscorer caused Atleti’s backline major issues due to his imposing physical presence: “He’s been really good. Causing them big problems with his physicality.”

Gyokeres was benched recently by Mikel Arteta against Manchester City and Newcastle United, with one Arsenal fan questioning the manager’s decision to substitute him against Atletico Madrid: “How do you take Gyokeres off when we need a goal?”

Another fan had the same complaint, as they wrote: “Arteta took Gyokeres off for [Gabriel] Jesus! I am tired.”

Finally, a sixth Arsenal fan believes Gyokeres is leading the club in their quest to win silverware this season: “Gyokeres is walking Arsenal towards greatness and no one is talking about it.”

The two-time Primeira Liga winner will be over the moon about the fans singing his praises.

With Gyokeres being widely slated this season, he still may be determined to prove a point against Atletico Madrid next week.

However, based on the stats, the Stockholm-born marksman should be proud of his heroics.

It is easy to see why Arsenal fans have lauded Gyokeres’ showing against Atletico Madrid as he was on the scoresheet, created a chance, had three touches in the opposition box and won five out of seven duels.

If the Gunners number nine leads the North Londoners to the Champions League final next Tuesday, he could be very close to becoming an Arsenal hero.
