Arsenal visit Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night in the Champions League semi-finals, with Mikel Arteta’s side looking to progress into the final for the first time since 2006 and keep their hopes of a double alive.
The Gunners edged past a stubborn Newcastle United side in the Premier League on Saturday, courtesy of a stunning early effort from Eberechi Eze. The result sees the North Londoners re-establish their lead at the summit of the English top flight, moving three points clear of Manchester City.
Although the Citizens still have a game in hand over Arteta’s team, the pressure is now on Pep Guardiola’s outfit heading into the next set of fixtures, given the Gunners have the points on the board. Arsenal host Fulham on Saturday evening, before City travel to Merseyside to face Everton on Monday.
Attention now turns away from this intense title race and towards continental action for Arteta and his players. The North London club have the opportunity to reach just their second ever Champions League final, and they’ll be feeling optimistic about their ability to do so.
Atletico are in a dire run of form, winning just two of their last nine matches across all competitions. Simeone’s team were involved in a chaotic affair at the weekend, beating Athletic Club 3-2 at the Metropolitano. This came after defeats to Elche and Real Sociedad, with the latter a devastating penalty shootout loss in the Copa del Rey final.
While these results provide Arsenal with reason for optimism, their own recent struggles mean they’re unlikely to breeze past what is still a competent and functional Atletico side.
