Arsenal host Sporting CP on Wednesday night in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, with Mikel Arteta’s side looking to progress to the semi-final stage for the second consecutive season, for the first time in the North London club’s history.
The Gunners take a 1-0 lead into the clash at the Emirates Stadium, having narrowly beaten Rui Borges’ outfit in Lisbon last week. Kai Havertz’s 91st-minute goal was the difference in the Portuguese capital, and Arteta’s outfit are now in a commanding position in the tie.
An exciting semi-final clash with either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid awaits, and Arteta should be able to use the prospect of facing either of these vulnerable Spanish teams as motivation for his players. That said, the Arsenal squad aren’t in a good place from a morale standpoint at the moment.
The North Londoners were well beaten by Bournemouth at the weekend, producing a dire performance in a toxic Emirates Stadium. They desperately need to respond with a comfortable victory in this second leg against Sporting, otherwise the tide could start to turn against Arteta’s team.
Sporting will be fresh when they head to N5, having rested a number of key players during their 1-0 win at Estrela de Amadora on Saturday. The likes of Goncalo Inacio, Ousmane Diomande, Hidemasa Morita and Geovany Quenda were all kept on the bench.
Arsenal will therefore come into this encounter with more fatigue, and Arteta will certainly be concerned that this physical aspect could play into the outcome of the game.
