Arsenal’s form may have temporarily fallen off a cliff in the last week and a bit, but fans can be forgiven for their disappointment and frustration because it did look for so long like manager Mikel Arteta’s side could have been on for the much fabled ‘quadruple’.
Having lost to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side in the League Cup Final and then seen a changed side struggle and lose poorly to Southampton in the FA Cup, domestic trophy dreams are over for another season. But we continue to progress well in the Champions League, and of course, we still hold a nine point gap over City when it comes to our long awaited battle to lift the Premier League trophy once again – particularly after our recent years as consistent runners up.
With us deep into the business end of the 2025/26 football calendar and football betting sites UK awash with the final odds for the year, most eyes are on the pitch and those battles, plenty are casting one eye over to the coming summer transfer window and the speculation rumour mill is already in full flow, and to be fair, as full of the usual nonsense that we have come to expect from so called insightful football reporting in this day and age.
Every now and then though there is an interesting claim that cuts through though but not always for the reasons you would originally think, and recent suggestions that we could be entertaining the signing of two new centre backs this summer is an interesting proposition.
Arteta has spent a number of years bolstering and refining our backline, and as fans know we now have one of the best in the business with only 22 goals conceded in this years domestic campaign – City are next with 28 and two sides are on 35 – so in terms of summer strengthening, the heart of defence would not be many people’s first guess.
Ordinarily this would be an easy piece of speculation to dismiss, but the two links in particular are a supposed long standing interest in versatile Real Madrid’s Victor Valdepenas Talavera – a 19 year old, Spanish Under 19 international, who can also feature as a left back, and 21 year old Jacobo Ramon who has seriously impressed at surprising Italian Serie A side, AS Como.
Ramon recently joined Como from Real Madrid and they hold a buy back clause and a 50% sell on fee on him, but from the perspective of the Gunners, they are both very much talents for the future and we have a good record when it comes to development.
Neither player is likely to overly excite the fanbase, and they would largely become a footnote capture to the start of next season as obviously all eyes will hopefully be on a successful title defence and incoming players who could make a major difference to the here and now of the 2026/27 season.
But as we look further ahead to the next few years, and possibly with Gabriel Magalhaes and his more recent injury problems more in mind with him now being 28 years old, both are an interesting proposition if the price is right, and we could certainly expect them to be loaned out pretty instantly to quickly bolster their experience levels.
Price dependent this could be one to bear in mind.
