Arsenal had a howler with Willian transfer

Arsenal have been rather active in the transfer market over the past few years in terms of the number of players they’ve brought into the club.

One player that the club secured a deal for not too long ago that turned out to be a rather poor bit of business from the Gunners is Willian.

After making 339 appearances for Chelsea in which he scored 63 goals and delivered 62 assists, the winger joined Arsenal on a free transfer in August 2020.

The Brazilian ended up spending just one season at the Emirates before ripping up his three-year contract just 54 weeks into it.

With a weekly wage of £240k-per-week according to Sky Sports, the former Chelsea star ultimately cost Arsenal £12.9m.

In the 25 Premier League appearances he made for Mikel Arteta’s side throughout the 2020/21 season, the 34-year-old only found the back of the net on one occasion.

His overall performances ultimately earned the attacker a rather uninspiring season rating of 6.65/10, making him one of the lowest-rated outfield players that started more than two league games according to WhoScored.

In addition to that, former Newcastle United player Rob Lee described Willian’s performances for the Gunners as “awful”, when asked by Football FanCast.

After bringing an early end to his time with Arsenal, the winger then went back to his home country to spend some time with Corinthians before making a return to England with Fulham where he currently is.

Even though the veteran has already provided an assist with just two league games under his belt for the west London club, it would be hard to imagine that anyone at Arsenal would be wishing they still had the winger in their squad.

Taking all of this into account, we feel that this move for Willian was a rather uninspiring one from Arsenal and Edu and is something that should be forgotten about completely.
