Arsenal currently only have one predominant left winger in their first-team squad in Gabriel Martinelli.

One familiar figure with whom the Gunners were linked in recent months who could have added some strength and depth to that area of Mikel Arteta’s squad is Wilfried Zaha. In 435 senior appearances for Crystal Palace, the winger has scored 87 goals and delivered 73 assists.

Another player with whom Arsenal were linked over the summer and who we feel could be Arteta’s own version of Zaha should they be successful in securing a move for him in the future is Cody Gakpo.

Across 148 appearances for PSV Eindhoven’s first team, the 23-year-old has found the net 52 times and supplied 42 assists.

This highlights the attacking talent that he has and how it mirrors Zaha in being able to score and set up goals for his team-mates. In fact, the Palace star is included on a list of similar players to Gakpo according to Football Transfers.

Last season saw both wingers end their respective campaigns with the highest average of dribbles per game at their clubs, with the Dutchman having 2.9 and Zaha 2.3, showing how tricky they can be for opponents to stop.

This season has seen Gakpo in hot form, scoring eight goals and providing six assists in just seven league games. That has earned him an overall performance rating of 9.09/10 from WhoScored, making him the highest-rated player in the Eredivisie.

This explains why he has been labelled an “enormous talent” by journalist Wierd Duk and shows why he would be a tremendous signing for Arsenal in that position.

If an opportunity to finally secure a deal for the PSV star crops up at some point in the near future for Arsenal, then the Gunners should do all they can to add him to their ranks, and not just to add another face on the left flank.
