One man in Mikel Arteta’s squad who has played a big part in the team’s early surge to the top of the table is Martin Odegaard. The Gunners’ captain has found the net three times in the first six games of the campaign.
Looking ahead, it seems as though the north London club have their eye on signing what could be Arteta’s next version of the Norwegian.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Arsenal are one of the clubs interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Jesper Lindstrom.
After making 123 appearances for Brondby across their senior and youth teams, during which he scored 41 goals and delivered 32 assists, the Denmark international joined his current club in the summer of 2021.
Since then, the 22-year-old has found the net eight times and supplied nine assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, leaving him with 49 goals in total throughout his career at senior and youth level.
This mirrors the sort of prowess in front of goal that Odegaard has delivered for Arsenal in terms of scoring and setting up goals for his team-mates, as the 23-year-old now has 12 goals and seven assists in 67 appearances for the Gunners.
In fact, the duo’s respective 2021/22 league campaigns highlight how similar they are, as not only did they both rack up four assists for their respective teams, they also had the same rate of goals scored per 90 minutes (0.23).
They also had an almost identical number of shots at goal throughout the season (55 vs 53) while winning more than 20 tackles each (25 vs 21), which shows just how useful they can be off the ball as well as in possession.
Hailed by journalist Seb Stafford-Bloor as a player who is “fun to watch”, Lindstrom certainly seems to have the credentials to be Arsenal’s next version of Odegaard as another young Scandinavian attacking midfielder.
