Mikel Arteta targets Spanish stopper David Raya

Brentford’s Spanish goalkeeper David Raya is a target for Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

The player’s agent, Jaume Monell, confirmed the interest to the newspaper amid speculation linking current Gunners stopper Emiliano Martinez with a move away from the Emirates.

Martinez looks to be on the verge of joining Aston Villa, leaving Arteta requiring a back-up to a back to number one Berd Leno.

Brentford stopper Raya has emerged as the main candidate for the role as his agent has made it clear he will do everything possible to try and secure the move this summer.

However, the Championship club, who just fell short in their hunt for promotion last term, have no desire to sell their keeper, who is contracted until 2023.

Raya represents a smart option for the Gunners, at 24 years old he may be happy to come and learn from an experienced operator like Leno and wait for his opportunity.

Something Martinez was unprepared to do any longer, having been with the club for eight years and after an impressive shift covering whilst Leno was out injured, the Argentinian decided the time was right to move on to pastures new.
