Wolves linked with a move for Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Arsenal’s versatile youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a transfer target for Wolves, according to Sky Sports.

It seems like the Gunners could be willing to listen to offers for the 22-year-old despite him being held in high regard by the club, as Mikel Arteta is unable to guarantee him a regular starting place next season.

Wolves, who finished one place above Arteta’s side in the truncated season, aren’t alone in their pursuit of the wide midfielder, who can also be used as an auxiliary full-back and winger.

Both Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United are also said to be interested in taking the England-Under 21 international this summer.

It is believed that Arsenal would want close to £20 million in order to allow him to leave the club this summer.

Maitland-Niles has still been a regular for the club, making 20 Premier League appearances in 2019/20 as well as starting the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves are in need of a wing-back following Jonny’s serious knee injury picked up in recent Europa League action so this link does make a lot of sense.

Maitland-Niles would likely leave the Emirates with a heavy heart having been with the North London club since he was 2003. His only spell away from Arsenal in that time came when he spent a season on loan with Ipswich Town.

Whilst he’s shown promise and is a valuable squad player, in a summer where the books need to be balanced, the Gunners may be wise to move Maitland-Niles on.
