Sokratis set to leave Arsenal this summer

Arsenal defender Sokratis is reportedly set to leave the club at the end of the season and Mikel Arteta is making the right call.

According to Greek outlet SportTime, Sokratis does not see his future being with Arsenal and the club are preparing to let him seal a transfer elsewhere.

The report claims that he could move to either Germany or the MLS, although nothing has been decided as of yet.

Sokratis, who has 90 caps for Greece, will have just one year left on his contract when the window opens this summer and this could be Arsenal’s last chance to recoup some money in terms of a transfer fee. If a club from the MLS or Germany comes in with a bid, it could be a good piece of business from Arsenal to cash in and move him on.

He has also only started one of Arsenal’s last six Premier League matches, filling in at right-back for Hector Bellerin. This shows that he is not currently in Arteta’s plans for the starting XI and could be a disposable member of the squad.

Arsenal also have young defender William Saliba due to return to the club from his loan with St Etienne in the summer. Saliba could come to England and take Sokratis’ place in the squad and challenge for a starting spot in Arteta’s team next season.

The impressive teenager has recorded a WhoScored rating of 6.7 in Ligue 1, which is higher than David Luiz has managed in the Premier League this season. Although Sokratis is rated slightly higher, Saliba is a much younger option and is viewed as one of the best up and coming defenders in European football.
