Lucas Torreira’s position in Arsenal’s squad could be at risk, with the Gunners reportedly interested in signing Hoffenheim midfielder Florian Grillitsch, according to SportsBild, via Chronicle Live.
Newcastle and Southampton are both also interested in signing the Austria international ahead of the summer transfer window.
Should Mikel Arteta’s side shore up their interest in the Bundesliga midfielder in the summer, it could spell the end of Torreira’s time at the Emirates.
Star Sport reported in December that the Uruguay international could look to return to Italy, having signed from Sampdoria in the summer of 2018.
This is despite having been a regular in the first team this season, having played 24 times in the Premier League since the beginning of the campaign.
With interest in Grillitsch though, who has played 22 times in the league himself this season, perhaps Arteta is preparing for life without the 24-year old?
Aside from Torreira, Arsenal have Granit Xhaka, Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi jostling for a central midfield spot, while Arsenal’s interest in Atletico Madrid man Thomas Partey may also suggest that Torreira’s days are limited.
With options well stacked for the Spanish manager, he may need to allow one player to go this summer in order to invest elsewhere in his squad.
The transfer rumours linking Torreira with a move away from Arsenal certainly add fuel to the fire that should Arsenal push harder to sign any of their reported targets, that his days as a Gooner could be numbered.
