Arsenal and Chelsea named as potential destinations for Guimaraes

Arsenal and Chelsea have been named as two potential destinations for Athletico Paranaense midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Globo Esporte lists Atletico, Arsenal, Benfica, Chelsea and Flamengo as the options Guimaraes can choose from as he edges closer to a move away from Athletico Paranaense.

Atletico Madrid have been previously linked with the player, but a deal to join the Spanish side is unlikely for Guimaraes, with Simeone’s men prioritising a move for a new striker.

Arsenal and Chelsea can take hope from the fact that Benfica have recently spent bid on Julian Weigl from Borussia Dortmund, while the report adds that a move to Flamengo is unlikely with Europe believed to be his favoured destination.

On paper, Benfica may have seemed like the logical move for the Brazilian to take a step into European football, but their decision to sign Weigl from Dortmund surely casts serious doubts over their interest in a deal.

Moving to one of Europe’s ‘minor’ leagues, while still having the ability to play in either the Champions League or the Europa League could’ve been a great learning curve to prepare the player ahead of a future Premier League switch.

Globo Esporte’s report doesn’t go into too much detail regarding Arsenal’s interest, in fact, very little at all. They focus heavily on Chelsea, who have been long-term admirers of the player.

You have to wonder if the London duo are merely being named in an effort to drum up interest in the Brazilian midfielder.
