Arsenal ahead of Tottenham in race for Lemar

Arsenal appear to be leading Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Thomas Lemar from Atletico Madrid.

According to claims from Spanish news outlet AS, as cited in a report from The Daily Mirror, the Frenchman could be set to leave the La Liga giants in the January transfer window.

The Gunners and Jose Mourinho’s club are seemingly set to fight it out over the acquisition of the wide man, but Arsenal are noted as the front-runners.

It is claimed that Mikel Arteta’s side are in a stronger financial position than Tottenham to sign Lemar, who is rated at £60 million, this month.

Lemar hasn’t been a success at Atletico since his big-money move from AS Monaco, but it goes without saying that he remains a hugely talented player.

He has struggled to make an impression under Diego Simeone but could flourish in a more expressive system, such as that of Arteta’s.

Whether or not it would be wise to spend £60 million on yet another winger so soon after the £72 million signing of Nicolas Pepe is debatable, but Lemar would certainly improve the Gunners in the final third.

The priority has to be strengthening the back-line this month. However, if an opportunity to sign the Atletico star is indeed there, it could be too good for Arsenal to turn down.
