Arsenal considering swoop for Nathan Ake

Arsenal have identified Nathan Ake as a possible transfer target, according to a report from The Telegraph

The Bournemouth defender is currently sidelined with an injury problem, but it seems he is in the thinking of top Premier League clubs with the January window now open.

Mikel Arteta appears to be keen on adding to his defensive options following the confirmation that Calum Chambers is set to miss the rest of the season with cruciate ligament damage.

The Telegraph reports that Daniele Rugani and Dayot Upamecano are being considered, while Netherlands international Ake is the latest name to enter the frame.

It goes without saying that Arsenal need a new central defender. Even before the news of Chambers’ long-term injury emerged, it was apparent that greater quality was required in the heart of the team’s back-line.

Ake has been a consistent performer for Bournemouth over the past few seasons, and he would undoubtedly improve the options at Arteta’s disposal.

However, just whether or not he is a player capable of lifting the Gunners up to the next level remains to be seen, with the likes of RB Leipzig star Upamecano appearing to be more of an attractive proposition.

Either way, Arsenal could certainly do with another central defender who can provide a long-term partner for William Saliba. Perhaps Ake fits the bill…
