Arsenal had been hoping to appoint a new manager in the summer, but the club have since been forced to ramp up their plans to bring in Mikel Arteta.
According to the Mirror, as cited on the Express, the Gunners had hoped that Freddie Ljungberg would be able to see the club through until the end of the season following Unai Emery’s sacking.
However, with the famous ‘new manager bounce’ nowhere to be seen, the club have had to take action.

Ljungberg’s interim spell in charge of the club has been a huge disappointment for everyone involved.
How much of that is down to Ljungberg remains to be seen, if nothing else it highlights the size of the problems that have developed at the Emirates.

The Swede may have guided the Gunners to victory against West Ham, but that has not been enough to lift the spirits at the Emirates, with just one win from Ljungberg’s four league games.
Arsenal also know that they would’ve had to move quickly if they wanted to get Arteta in as well. He’s someone who has long been expected to go into management and the Gunners were at risk of missing out on the Spaniard once again if they waited any longer.
