Bowyer slams Arsenal’s “frail” defence

Former Leeds United midfielder Lee Bowyer has identified Arsenal’s big problem that they’ve had for years.

The current Charlton Athletic manager believes that the Gunners are “frail” defensively and that’s what is costing them success at the moment, as reported on the Metro.

When speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate show, Bowyer said:

Defensively Arsenal are frail, they concede too many goals.

Their centre-halves have been a problem for years. It’s not just been this season, it’s been for a while now.

The Gunners have conceded 15 times in the Premier League this season, which is seven more than third-placed Leicester City and six more than leaders Liverpool.

Is Bowyer right?

He’s spot on. Defence is an area that Arsenal have struggled to strengthen for numerous years and Unai Emery failed to do so once again.

The acquisition of David Luiz was a good bargain, however, the Brazilian isn’t known for his defensive prowess.

Centre-backs like Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi are hugely inconsistent, which means the Gunners rarely have an established centre-back pairing.

Arsenal find themselves in a similar situation to how Liverpool were before the arrival of Van Dijk. All Arsenal need to do now is find their own version of the Dutchman.
