Darren Bent believes Arsenal should consider a shock move for Jan Vertonghen next summer.
The Gunners continue to look fragile at the back, despite the summer acquisition of David Luiz, who has blown hot and cold in his first few months at the club.
Vertonghen’s current Spurs deal expires at the end of the season and he is yet to commit his future to the club.
Speaking to Football Insider, former Spurs striker Bent said Arsenal should eye up bringing him in on a free transfer:
Jan Vertonghen, playing at the centre of the defence, are there too many more that are going to be better than him?
If you’re going to take him on a free, Arsenal could do with him.
If he’s on a free don’t be surprised if they’re in the mix for him as well. I think it’s a situation they need to address but at the same time I wouldn’t want to see these players walk away for nothing.
It’s a difficult one, they’re down to a free, they’re obviously not going to sign new contracts so what do you do?

Vertonghen has been an excellent servant for Spurs, but the chance of him ever joining Arsenal is slim.
For starters, moving to Spurs’ north London rivals would not go down well, potentially hampering his legacy at the club.
Vertonghen will also be 33 by the time his contract expires and there is a strong argument to say that his best days are behind him.
Arsenal needs to be considering a younger option – someone who can be a mainstay at the heart of the defence for many years.
