A timid Arsenal lost 1-0 to Sheffield United at the Bramall Lane after putting up one of the inept performances.
Lys Mousset scored for the home side around the half-hour mark and the Gunners struggled from there on to muster enough chances to equalise, let alone searching for the winner.
After a tight start to the game, Arsenal had a chance on the counter in the 21st minute when Sead Kolasinac found Nicolas Pepe with an excellent cross. However, the latter couldn’t get enough purchase into the shot to score.
Then, nine minutes later, Sheffield United took the lead when John O’Connell’s knockdown from a preceding corner was met by Mousset from close range into the back of the net.
Arsenal had a half chance to equalise at the stroke of half-time, but it wasn’t to be for Granit Xhaka. In the second half, their attacks were sporadic at best, and deserved to not score in the game.
All in all, another under-par performance by the Gunners away from home. Too many of them have happened under Unai Emery now.
Here’s how we rated their players after the game:
Bernd Leno - 5
Didn’t command the box well when Arsenal conceded the goal. Other than that, he was asked to be alert a couple of times in the second half.
Calum Chambers - 5
Since Arsenal had most possession of the ball, especially in the second half, Chambers struggled on the overlap as he is not a natural right-back.
Sokratis - 6
Played well apart from a couple of hiccups at the back that were not costly in the end. He should have won Arsenal a penalty early on when his shirt was tugged inside the box.
David Luiz - 6
The Brazilian star played well apart from a couple of moments where he was being hassled by the United front two. His long-range forward passing was sumptuous at times.
Sead Kolasinac - 6
The left-back had a decent game where he created one clear-cut chance in the first half and supported the attacks at all times.
Granit Xhaka - 5
The captain had one cracking volley effort that tested Dean Henderson at the stroke of half-time. Other than that, he struggled to control the midfield and dictate the positive passing moves. Subbed off in the second half.
Matteo Guendouzi - 5
This was not the youngster’s best game. He struggled with his passing and had his hands full living up with the intensity of the Blades’ closing down in the middle third.
Nicolas Pepe - 4
The winger struggled to impact the game once again and missed a great chance in the first half to put his team ahead. Subbed off in the second half.
Joe Willock - 3
The youngster started as one of the advanced midfielders and was nowhere to be seen in the first half. Subbed off at half-time.
Bukayo Saka - 5
This wasn’t his best game by a mile and he struggled to put anything together in the final third. Got booked for an extravagant dive in the penalty box.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - 4
The in-form striker was reduced to flicks and tricks at the edge of the box. He was well marshalled by the United defenders all game long.
(SUB) Dani Ceballos - 6
Came on at half-time and changed the passing pattern for the better in the second half. However, that wasn’t enough to fashion a goal-scoring opportunity.
(SUB) Alex Lacazette - 4
Came on in the last 20 minutes and it was clear that he was rusty after returning from a lengthy injury.
(SUB) Gabriel Martinelli - N/A
Came on in the final 10 minutes and didn’t get much time to really impact the game.
