Wenger says staying at Arsenal cost him trophies – Is he right?

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that staying at the Gunners cost him more silverware.

Wenger was at the helm of the north London club from 1996 to 2018 and won the Premier League three times.

He famously managed the ‘Invincibles’, and also lifted the FA Cup seven times with the Gunners. However, he believes that his loyalty to the club cost him the chance of winning more trophies with another club. He said:

Regret is that maybe I sacrificed a little bit the winning potential against the loyalty potential, or the desire to build up the club and the influence I had on the club to build up the club when we built the stadium, against the fact that I could have won more by going somewhere else and being less limited financially.

Is Wenger right?

Wenger was pursued by Spanish giants Real Madrid on multiple occasions during his time with Arsenal, but he chose to remain in north London.

If he moved to Madrid, he would most likely have won plenty more silverware. He was also tipped for the managerial role of the France national team, which is another place where he could have won trophies.

At the end of the day, he chose loyalty and stability over his hunger and desire for silverware. He can look back at his managerial career with pride and who knows, he may still lead a side to glory in the coming years.
