Wenger aims a bizarre dig at Arsenal – has he got a valid point?

Arsene Wenger appears to have aimed a bizarre dig at his former side whilst discussing Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino.

Speaking to beIN Sports about the under-pressure Spurs boss, as reported by the Metro, Wenger revealed that clubs are lowering their expectations in the Premier League these days.

Every year people want something more from you. I experienced that at Arsenal. We were 20 consecutive years in the top four but in the end it was not enough. Today, if you get in the Champions League people are very happy.

Has Wenger got a point?

It is a growing trend among Premier League clubs that the top four is the sole purpose each season.

What it also highlights is how impressive Wenger’s ability to almost guarantee Champoins League football was.

While you can call it unambitious, it tells you a lot about the current quality of Manchester City and Liverpool – two teams that are simply levels apart from the rest of the ‘top six’.

Until the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and United can even come close to challenging both City and Liverpool – just getting into the top four has to be the aim.

These clubs need the financial riches and pulling power that comes with Champions League football in order to bridge the gap to the two aforementioned Premier League giants or the top flight risks becoming dominated by two powerhouses.
