# Leipzig working on new Upamecano deal with no release clause – a key moment for the Gunners?

RB Leipzig are reportedly hoping to tie down Arsenal target Dayot Upamecano to a new deal, which could see the Frenchman’s current release clause removed.

That’s according to [German outlet SportBild, cited by Sports Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/bundesliga-side-working-remove-players-release-clause-arsenal-bid-summer/), who claim that the Bundesliga side are looking to offer the defender a new contract, despite his current deal running until 2021.

The report also claims that the Gunners launched a bid in the region of €60 million for the highly-rated youngster over the summer, which appears to have been a catalyst in Leipzig’s attempts to remove their star man’s release clause.

But how big a blow is this in the Gunners’ pursuit of the star central defender?

If he signs a talked-about new deal, then, of course, it would be a big blow and would leave Leipzig with the pulling power over any fee they want for the 20-year-old.

However, the player will know all about Arsenal’s summer interest, and if he is keen on making the move to England in January, he won’t sign a new deal, leaving Arsenal in prime position to secure his services.

As most transfers pan out nowadays, a potential move for the player in the new year will ultimately depend on the player’s preference.

Arsenal fans will be hoping that the Frenchman has his eyes set on a move to the Emirates, and he’s shown over the past 18 months that he’d have the ability to solve the Gunners’ recent central defensive woes.
