Strachan compares Tierney to Van Dijk – could he help Arsenal get top four?

Gordan Strachan has said that Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney reminds him of Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk.

Strachan, who managed Tierney with Scotland, says that Tierney will help Arsenal reach the top four this season due to his impressive reading of the game from the back.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, he said:

He reminds me of Van Dijk in that way. The first time I watched Virgil and Kieran play, I thought, ‘Are you lucky, or are you brilliant at reading the game?’

I’d love to see some analysis on how many times he intercepts or clears the ball in the box. He thinks like a forward, so he understands what they’re going to do. So he’ll certainly help Arsenal get to the top four.

Is Tierney the key to Arsenal finishing in the top four?

Quite possibly. The top teams all have excellent fullbacks, when you look at the likes of Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, etc. Tierney could be the top-class fullback Arsenal have been missing – a player who can both defend and attack to great effect.

Tierney is a capable defender, whilst also having the presence of mind to pick out his teammates in the final third to create chances. This could be a valuable asset for Arsenal throughout the season and help them return to the Champions League.
