It’s fair to say that Shkodran Mustafi hasn’t been adored by the Gunners faithful over the past 12 months.
The German defender struggled for form in the second half of the previous campaign and was seemingly surplus to requirements under Unai Emery over the summer.
However, after he failed to complete a move away from the Emirates, Emery has eased Mustafi back into the first-team fold in recent weeks, starting him in the wins against both Eintracht Frankfurt and Nottingham Forest.
The Gunners didn’t concede a goal in either game, which was sarcastically pointed out by an Arsenal fan on social media.
Twitter: I hate to say this but @MustafiOfficial has played 2 games and kept 2 clean sheet.

Mustafi himself then responded to the tweet, and these Arsenal fans were quick to back the defender.

As one fan mentioned, you can’t please everyone, and it’s nice to see the defender respond to the sarcastic dig.
The 27-year-old has been solid in both the Europa League and Carabao Cup fixtures he’s turned out in, and although it is still rather early to call for a Premier League return for the defender, more solid performances will in cup competitions will only make Emery think twice on the player’s future.
Both David Luiz and Sokratis have struggled in the league, so who knows, by the turn of the year, Mustafi may have turned it around completely and be back in the fold on a regular basis.
