Chambers reveals Emery talks – does he have a long-term future at Arsenal?

Calum Chambers has revealed that he held talks with Unai Emery over the summer to clarify his position within the squad.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Chambers confirmed that he discussed his Arsenal future with the manager after returning from his loan spell at Fulham.

We spoke at the start of the season. The plan always was for me to go to Fulham, to come back and play here. That was always my plan in my head. I went away, at Fulham it was great.

I had a great time there, gained some experience and have come back here and wanted to bring what I learnt last season back here and to help out the team.

Obviously it was disappointing, but I respect the manager and I respect his decision. He spoke to me and I spoke to him. What was said is between me and him.

The signing of David Luiz from Chelsea had previously cast doubts over his place in the squad, but he is now looking to nail down a regular spot in Emery’s side – can he do that this season?

Read Arsenal verdict

There have been plenty of Arsenal fans expressing their desire to see Chambers return to the side, especially after some high-profile errors from both David Luiz and Sokratis.

He’s a player that has often divided opinions in the past but after seeing him impress on loan at Fulham last season, there was a genuine belief that he could come back and offer something to a potentially new-look Arsenal defence.

Alongside Rob Holding, Chambers is now a player that a lot of supporters high have hopes for.

With Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin edging ever closer to their returns to full fitness, the Gunners could potentially line up with a very young back four and fans will be hoping to see Chambers be the one to step up into a leadership role within that team.
