Arsenal fans hit out at Unai Emery after he backs Granit Xhaka

Unai Emery has backed captain Granit Xhaka after Arsenal fans ironically cheered the Spaniard’s decision to substitute the midfielder in the 3-2 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Swiss star was replaced by Joe Willock with 20 minutes remaining with the Gunners 2-1 down to newly-promoted Aston Villa.

However, dramatic late goals from Callum Chambers and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang helped Emery’s side to a 3-2 win and their first victory in the Premier League for 36 days.

Emery was asked about Xhaka’s performance following the win, and talking to the media, cited by Arsenal fan @ZR_7G1, he said:

Xhaka is a very important player for us. He has a big commitment and he is improving. I am not asking people to support him but I am sure he is going to achieve the best things if the supporters help him.

For me he is a very important player, I am going to support him. His commitment and behaviour is great.

And these Arsenal fans were quick to reply to the Spaniard’s comments, with many slamming the boss.

Even though the Gunners came out on top on Sunday, many fans have continued to question Emery’s decision making.

Xhaka, admittedly, performed well in the week against Eintracht Frankfurt, however, his displays in the Premier League have been woeful.

Emery’s willingness to continue with Xhaka, as some fans mentioned, could have an impact on his time at the Emirates, with alternative midfield options regularly left out to accommodate Xhaka.

It’ll be interesting to see if Emery sticks with the midfielder against Manchester United next Monday, and if Arsenal fans had any say in the matter, the Swiss international would more than likely be left out of the squad entirely.
