# Venkatesham hints are more big spending – where do the club need to strengthen?

Vinai Venkatesham appears to have dropped a hint that Arsenal’s big spending is not going to stop anytime soon.

[Speaking to the Strait Times, as cited by football.london,](https://www.football.london/arsenal-fc/players/vinai-venkatesham-explains-arsenal-able-16944541) the club’s managing director explains how implementing the club’s young players into the first-team squad could free up more money to spend in the transfer market.

> The more players you have coming from the academy, the more funds you can then use to invest in the transfer window because you then have a budget that is being stretched among fewer players.
>
> More important than that is we want players in the dressing room who really understand what it means to play for Arsenal, players who have grown up with the club.

After breaking their transfer record on Nicolas Pepe over the summer, what position do the Gunners need to invest in next?

### Read Arsenal verdict

One area that fans will want improving is the defence. Neither David Luiz or Sokratis can be considered as long-term options and the club will surely want to add to their backline for next season.

They have William Saliba joining next summer, but he, Rob Holding and Calum Chambers may not be considered as enough depth in that position.

Arsenal will also need to be wary about the prospect of losing Dani Ceballos next summer. A permanent deal has not been ruled out at this stage, but the Spaniard still holds out hope of playing for Real.

The club will need to have a suitable replacement lined up for Ceballos if it becomes clear if he will not be remaining at the Emirates. Such is the quality of the Madird loanee, whoever comes in to replace him will not be cheap.

Arsenal fans can take hope from the number of younger players being introduced into the first-team squad because if Venkatesham’s comments are anything to go by, this could lead to some big spending next summer.
